Bentley College and City Year Launch the “give a year” Partnership.

On September 12th, Bentley and City Year jointly announced the formation of a groundbreaking new program designed to bridge the worlds of higher education and national service. The program enables Bentley students who opt to “give a year” of service with City Year, a renowned national youth service organization, to receive scholarship support, gain internship opportunities with leading global organizations and earn service learning credits. Bentley is supporting the partnership with a $1,000,000 commitment over five years to provide up to ten $20,000 scholarships annually to Bentley National Service Scholars who participate in the program. They will also receive scholarship support and compensation during their year of service.

The new “give a year” program was launched during the ServiceNation Summit, a national conference celebrating the power and potential of service — and laying out a national agenda for addressing America’s societal challenges through increased civic engagement. The Summit, co-presented by TIME on September 12th in New York City, aimed to transform the tragic events of 9/11 into a positive movement for change. The event featured some of the world’s most prominent opinion leaders, politicians and entertainers. City Year is one of the Summit’s organizers.

In a communications effort timed to correspond with the events of the ServiceNation Summit, Bentley President Gloria Cordes Larson and City Year Co-Founder and CEO Michael Brown introduced the new “give a year” program to a national audience through speaking engagements at the Summit, and a two-page spread in the September 22nd special edition of TIME magazine (on newsstands Sept. 12th), which focused on national service. Pres. Larson was also a featured panelist at the Summit, speaking on “The Next Generation of Leaders in America: The Role of Higher Education in Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders to Serve.”
